Major Order from Dolomiti Superski successfully realized
The project EDELWEISS initiated by the worldwide biggest skipass association, Dolomiti
Superski, together with the italian association of cable car operators ANEF and the
Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) at the University of Padua formed the basis for the
introduction of a new ski pass system.
The task was by all means unique: Twelve valleys with altogether 138 autonomous lift
companies in the regions South Tyrol, Trentino and Veneto had to be equipped with a new
skipass system and had to be networked via a central data center. The leading providers of
skipass systems were invited to submit offers for realizing the project.
"At the end of the evaluation, two providers worldwide are left and both are from
Salzburg" said Superski director Dr. Franz Perathoner at the project presentation in
Salzburg.
"Due to the fact that also at a ski race there is just one winner, we have decided in
favor of Axess". For the Salzburg company, founded as recently as seven years ago, the
project posed a logistic challenge that however was accomplished without major problems as
Mr Perathoner confirmed.
Between the placing of the order in June 2003 and the start of operation in November 2004
were only 15 months. Five months were used for the specifications and planning – ten
months were used for development, production, training and start of operation.
Many system components still had to be developed a new and in total approximately 10000
pieces of equipment and several million smart cards had to be delivered to the various
locations.
On schedule at the start of the winter season 2004/05, 300 Point of Sale systems and more
than 1500 Readers with Turnstiles at 450 uphill transportation devices were operational and
connected to the data center in Bozen.
Approximately 2000 devices send about 1 million encrypted data records per night via GPRS
to the data center for processing. Already the next morning, operators can analyze the
revenue and rides of the previous day.
